Computer and IT tutoring in Charlestown

A busy centre with a lot of unit living, which brings its own particular set of problems, most of them involving Wi-Fi and neighbours.

Around ten to fifteen minutes from Warners Bay depending on the traffic near the shopping centre.

Charlestown is ten to fifteen minutes from me depending on how the traffic is behaving around the shopping centre, and I am over this way regularly.

Units, Wi-Fi and noisy neighbours

Charlestown has far more apartment and unit living than most suburbs around the lake, and that creates a specific problem I see here more than anywhere else: Wi-Fi that is unreliable for reasons that have nothing to do with your equipment.

In a block of units, your wireless is competing with everybody else’s. The router sits where the technician left it, usually in a cupboard or behind a television, all the devices are fighting over the same crowded channel, and the result is video calls that break up and streaming that stalls every evening at seven o’clock when the whole building comes home.

Almost none of that requires new hardware. It requires somebody who knows how to look at what the neighbours are using and move you out of the way of it. That is generally a one-session job and it fixes a problem people have often lived with for years.

Downsizing

The other thing I see a lot of here is people who have recently moved into something smaller. That usually means a new television, a new internet connection, a printer that has not been set up yet, and a box of cables nobody can identify.

It is a good moment to get everything working properly at once rather than piecemeal, and it is worth doing before the frustration sets in. The seniors page covers how those sessions usually run.

Buying before you buy

With the shopping centre right there, it is easy to be talked into more computer than you need. Ring me first. I sell nothing, earn no commission, and twenty minutes of advice regularly saves people several hundred dollars. The buying guides are free and cover the common traps.

Common questions

Booking from Charlestown

Do you charge extra to come to Charlestown?

No. Charlestown is well inside the service area, so there is no call-out fee and no travel charge. The price is $65 an hour whether you are five minutes away or twenty-five.

How soon could you get to Charlestown?

Usually within a week. Around ten to fifteen minutes from Warners Bay depending on the traffic near the shopping centre. Lessons run weeknights from 4pm to 8pm and weekends from 8am to 3pm, because I work in IT full time. Weeknight slots fill first.

Do I have to come to you, or will you come to me in Charlestown?

Whichever suits you. Most people prefer an in-home visit, because we then work on your own computer and your own internet connection. You are equally welcome to come to me in Warners Bay.
