Cheap hardware for a home lab, and what not to buy

The most common reason people never start a home lab is a belief that it requires expensive equipment. It does not, and starting expensive is usually a mistake.

Here is what to actually get.

Start with what you have

Before buying anything, check what is already in the house or available for free:

  • An old desktop replaced a few years ago
  • A laptop with a broken screen, which is fine as a headless server
  • A retired work machine
  • Anything a relative is about to throw out

An eight-year-old desktop with 8GB of memory runs a perfectly useful first lab. You do not need anything better to learn virtualisation, Linux and networking, which is the entire first year of material.

The sweet spot: an ex-corporate desktop

If you are buying, this is the best value available in Australia.

Businesses replace desktops on a three to five year cycle and dispose of them in bulk. They are better built than consumer machines, they are quiet, they sip power, and they turn up constantly.

Look for: a small form factor machine from Dell, HP or Lenovo, an i5 or better, and ideally 16GB of memory.

Where: local computer recyclers, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and government or school auction sites. Around the Hunter there are usually several listed at any time.

What to pay: $80 to $200 depending on age and memory. Above $250 you are into diminishing returns for a first lab.

Ask for it with the drive removed if it is ex-corporate. Many sellers do this anyway, and drives are cheap.

What to spend money on, in order

1. Memory. The thing you run out of first, always. Virtual machines consume memory faster than anything else. Going from 8GB to 32GB in a second-hand desktop costs perhaps $60 and roughly quadruples what you can run at once. This is the best money in the whole exercise.

2. An SSD. Everything feels slow on a mechanical drive, and a slow lab is a lab you stop using. Around $50 for 500GB.

3. A second drive for storage, once you want to store anything substantial. A used enterprise hard drive is cheap and fine for a lab.

4. A managed switch, once you want to do VLANs properly. $50 to $120 second-hand. Do not buy this first; wait until you have a specific reason.

5. A second machine, eventually, when you want to learn clustering or high availability. Two cheap machines teach more than one expensive one, and this is where a lot of people go wrong.

What not to buy

Rack-mounted enterprise servers. The classic beginner mistake. They are cheap second-hand for a reason: they are extremely loud, they draw serious power, they need proper cooling, and your family will object within a week. A machine that gets unplugged because of the noise teaches you nothing.

A NAS, as your first purchase. Appliances are convenient and they hide exactly the things you are trying to learn. Build storage yourself first.

A Raspberry Pi as your only machine. Excellent for specific small jobs and too limited for a general lab. Get one as an addition, not as the foundation.

Anything new. There is no first-lab purchase where new hardware is the right answer.

More than one thing at a time. Every purchase should be triggered by something specific you cannot currently do. Buying ahead of your understanding is how people end up with a cupboard of equipment and no lab.

A realistic first build

The free version Old desktop you already have, plus a USB stick. Total: $0. Runs Proxmox with two or three virtual machines. Genuinely enough for months of learning.

The $200 version Ex-corporate small form factor desktop with an i5, upgraded to 32GB memory, plus a 500GB SSD. Runs eight to ten virtual machines comfortably. This will serve you for years.

The $400 version The above, plus a second machine for clustering and a managed switch for VLANs. This is a genuinely capable lab and more than most people ever need at home.

There is no point going beyond that until something specific demands it.

Power

Worth thinking about, since it runs continuously.

A small form factor desktop idles at roughly 15 to 30 watts, which is a few dollars a month. A full-size tower with several drives might be 60 to 100 watts. An old rack server can be 200 watts or more, which is where the electricity bill becomes a genuine argument at home.

This is another reason the small ex-corporate desktop is the right answer.

Where to look around the Hunter

Local computer recyclers and repair shops frequently have ex-lease machines they will sell cheaply, and they are often happy to talk to somebody learning. Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree carry them constantly. Schools, councils and universities dispose of equipment through auction sites, sometimes in lots.

Ask around, too. A surprising number of people have a working desktop in a cupboard they would be glad to see used.

Then actually build it
